ASTD Houston has always provided great opportunities for its members and this year is no different. The 2013 ASTD Houston Board has planned a great year of programing with monthly events offering learning and networking along with National ASTD professional events and our Technology and Fall conferences.

This year, ASTD National's biggest conference will be held right next door in Dallas. If you have never attended an ASTD National conference, this year is a great opportunity to see what you have been missing. Contact us for volunteer opportunities.

I am excited to be a part of this organization as we grow and accomplish our goals for this year. As a leadership team, we are focusing on strengthening our membership and reaching out to the community around us. If you have any suggestions for programs, events or ways for us to improve the services we provide to members, please feel free to contact me or other members of the board. We are here to serve you.

Remembering Kenan

ASTD Houston is indebted to many talented leaders who have contributed their time and energy to our chapter.

We recently lost one of those special people. Kenan Branam, Vice President of Technology from 2009 to 2010, passed away unexpectedly on April 14, 2012.

Kenan was instrumental in helping our Chapter with our website and advances in technology. As a new “non-techie” board member, I especially appreciated his calm, patient demeanor. Kenan was one of those people who was always willing to help and truly had a heart of gold.

An official announcement said it well: “A great number of local organizations were fortunate to have Kenan initiate lively and thought provoking conversations while bringing his gifts of philosophy, kindness, laughter and an artistic sensibility to their gatherings.”

Our thoughts and sympathy go out to Kenan’s family and friends. He will be missed.

Got Fun?

Sitting on a plane recently, I was struck by how long it’s been since I read some of the
good old “basics” in my training library. I was reviewing information to revise a course
and suddenly got wrapped up in the excitement and enthusiasm I felt the first time I read
about this subject – accelerated learning. The subject is less important than the feeling of
inspiration it brought up in me.

Am I the only one who sometimes gets so caught up in keeping up that I forget the stuff
I’ve known forever? Like how exciting it is to be a part of the learning industry, to
watch people’s faces light up when they “get it” for themselves. Or learning about team
building or leadership because you’re practicing with people who are living what they
teach….or the thrill of figuring out how to solve a problem with new technology…it’s so
much fun!

We know that learners create learning from their experience, and that it’s greatly
enhanced when they collaborate with others. Our education system, originating in19th
century values, certainly did not encourage collaboration or creative thinking. One sat,
seriously shut up, and listened to the all-knowing instructor.

Today, no matter how brilliant one is, it’s pretty much impossible to keep up with
changes and technology in isolation. And when you surround yourself with other bright,
passionate, motivated people, collaboration is easy and fun. Especially if they’re a bunch
of learning and development professionals! I’ve never met one that didn’t like to share
their expertise, have you?

So just for today, I will remember how fun this industry is. And that I don’t have to be
brilliant and know everything. I just have to be smart enough to surround myself with
other L&D professionals, ask questions, share ideas, and have fun collaborating!

Have we stopped paddling?

You’ve all heard the joke about how a duck looks so placid and calm atop the water but under the water’s surface his feet are paddling as hard as they can. I ask the question, “Have we stopped paddling?” When the economy was claimed as “down turn,” “slow growth,” everyone was paddling as fast as they could to keep their jobs, pay down bills, repair and maintain rather than buy and build. Now that it looks like the economy is on an upswing have you stopped paddling and started looking for respite? Whoops…now it looks like a downturn again…wait a minute, it might have spiked…get the picture?

Learning should never stop, no matter what the economy brings. In fact, it’s often been said we can learn the most when times are tough because we seem to understand the priority of change, flexibility and focus. ASTD Houston has made a lot of changes from last year, and we continue to grow, focus and flex as we meet the needs of our members. Your continued learning is a result of your own effort and abilities. ASTD Houston offers monthly meetings, Community Training Networks, networking events, ASTD National classes as well as professional development events so learning opportunities never end. All elected officers other than the president-elect are invited to gain apprenticeship experience in their new roles by participating in board meetings during the 4thquarter of each calendar year. The president-elect plays an active role during the year prior to assuming the role of President, effective as of the election date (not the calendar year). All positions below are responsible for submitting reports/information to the Board and attending meetings, including the membership meetings. In addition, there are responsibilities specific to each board position. Each elected board member acts as the Chairperson for a standing functional committee. Sonia Shamar, 2010 Scholarship Award Winner

I am honored to receive the ASTD Houston Scholarship award this year. I would like to thank ASTD Houston Chapter for their thoughtfulness in this regard.

I have been an ASTD Houston member since one year and am pleased with the invaluable learning experiences this institution has made available to me. As a volunteer in the membership committee this gives me an opportunity to meet lots of interesting people well established in the HRD profession. I have also volunteered in some events organized by the Chapter that has enabled me to get involved in the HRD community as a whole.

As a member of the chapter and getting involved in various events as a volunteer is a worthwhile investment of my time. The programs they sponsor are educational as well as enjoyable. I especially look forward to the Marquee events organized by the Chapter every three months where in they bring speakers who are expert in the topic under discussion as well as fun and interesting at the same time. Being a student member has been a great benefit since the Chapter provides special student discounts for all events organized by them and these events give me a chance to network with and learn from Learning and Development professionals.

Although I have been a member of ASTD Houston for only a year, I feel like I’m already a part of the group – as we say: ‘ASTD Houston family’. I have learned a lot from all the members and speakers. The Board/ management team has been so welcoming and encouraging. I plan to sustain being a part of this family, volunteer for them, learn from them and continue to enhance my knowledge in the HRD domain.

I would once again like to thank ASTD Houston for their confidence in my career goals. The award motivates me to strive even more in order to achieve these goals.

Presently there are four membership categories: general, student, senior and corporate. See the website for descriptions of each category. There is a yearly membership fee which can be paid by credit card. There is no processing fee.

Selecting a Location Venue

The most important element of a successful event is appropriateness of the location. The communication objective provides the standard for evaluating the location venue. For example, if your intention is to have an authoritative, instructional presentation with one speaker, then a room that allows for theatre style seating would be appropriate. If the objective is to have a more experiential, interactive session, then seating "in the round" would be more facilitative. If you intend to document the event with video, you would have a whole other level of parameters to evaluate.

In order to communicate effectively, no matter what the message is, the venue, the "medium", must be as transparent as possible. That is, the participants (and the presenter) must be able to attend, see, and hear the message clearly! Noise, low or misdirected lighting, or distracting, non-essential activity will challenge and stress the full attention that the audience needs to "get" the message you intend.
