Event Description

Technology in Action

If you are responsible for learning AND show up to work and sit at a computer, and/or carry a mobile device, YOU are a learning professional with technology on your mind. Can technology give you an edge as a learning professional?

This conference is a supplement/add-on to the annual, national ASTD Technology Conference for those members who were unable to attend that event, or those who desire additional information re: National Conference topics, because the topics of this conference follow those of the National conference closely. The conference will provide information on tools, trends & experience using technology in the design & delivery of training.

Are you asking questions like these?

  • What are the strategic advantages of deploying eLearning vs. mLearning?
  • What types of content are best for eLearning and mLearning?
  • What are the design and development issues we need to consider with eLearning and mLearning?
  • What tools are best for developing engaging eLearning and mLearning?
  • How do we determine which mobile platforms and/or operating systems are right for us?
  • What's the impact of the context in which the learner is using eLearning and mLearning?
  • What are the latest cloud-based applications used in eLearning and mLearning

The Technology Confernce is focused on helping you and your organization make sense of this wide array of issues. Whether you are working in a corporate, academic, or government setting – whether you're focused on setting the strategy or leading the development effort – whether you're new to eLearning or have been at it for some time – you'll find the information, technologies, and resources you need to succeed the Technology Conference.

ASTD Houston takes an enormous amount of pride in how we plan, develop, and produce conferences. Our goal is to ensure that all participants are not only satisfied with how engaging, educational and fun an event is while they are there... but that they also develop new insight, knowledge, skills, and expertise they can actually use upon their return home.

Parking and Directions

Directions to Public Parking around University of Houston, Downtown.  Parking Map
Consider taking the MetroRail which will drop you off right next to the conference!

Use Google Maps to find the intersection of Travis and Girard in zip code 77002 (MapQuest is in error).  You should not use the university’s One Main Street address in your Google Map search.

You must head north on Travis—a one-way street-- to get to Girard.

You will turn right onto Girard and then immediately left into the city metered lot.

•             The cost is 75 cents per hour and credit cards are accepted.  If you use the metered lot, the entrance to the building will be across the street to the left of the garage.

Main Street is closed at the University and north of the University. (The Metro Line is open at Main, however).

There will be directional signs.  When asking directions on campus, you should ask for the Special Events Room (3rd Floor) in the One Main Building - Academic Building.

Technology Conference 2012

Friday, June 29,2012 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM CDT

Speaker Keynote: Ken Spero

Position: Managing Director, Immersive Learning University
Company: NexLearn

Biography

Keynote Topic:

When hiring a new employee or promoting someone from within, most organizations look for experience appropriate to the position and responsibilities.  Although skills are an important part of the requirements, experience often trumps skills because it is essential that the candidate be able to utilize those skills in a context applying both experience and critical thinking to the situation. Organizations typically use training strategies to improve performance which are built on instructional design techniques. When experience is required and the issues are contextual and therefore require critical judgment to effectively address, instruction is not enough. In this workshop, the speaker will discuss how to develop simulations which translate specific experience into learning modalities that engage the learner and help them apply the simulated experience to real-life situations.

During the session, we will explore how the existing PLATFORMS and TOOLS can be effectively utilized in the capture of Experience; how EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES can help with the efficient deployment of Experience; and how to enhance delivery strategies through the use of synchronous delivery either in the classroom or via VIRTUAL DELIVEY AND FACILITATION.

About Ken:

Ken Spero, Executive Director of the new Immersive Learning University (ILU) at NexLearn, LLC, has been designing, developing and delivering simulations both on-line and in the classroom for over 20 years. He is establishing the ILU as a primary source of education for the public on simulations and experiential learning with the objective of making the creation and use of Immersive Learning Simulations more available to the masses on a restricted budget. A faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania’s Work-Based Learning Leadership Graduate program, Ken is also a frequent presenter at learning conferences. He is also delivering the new Essentials of Experiential Learning and Simulation workshop for ASTD as part of the Essential Series of On-line Workshops.
